Red-winged Blackbird female hovering near a perch where she is about to land. Dark clouds had rolled in, so a fast shutter speed to capture this speedy little bird was out. This image was taken at a relatively slow shutter speed of 1/125 second, which allowed for more light, and gave a beautiful motion blur to her speedy wings! I call this image Blackbird Motion Dance, since she seems so graceful and lovely in her motion.

Among our most familiar birds, Red-winged Blackbirds seem to sing their nasal songs in every marsh and wet field from coast to coast. Their early arrival and tumbling song are happy indications of the return of spring. They are notably bold, and several will often attack a larger bird, such as a hawk or crow, that flies over their nesting area.
