Artist's Description
Taiban, New Mexico, was a bustling city in the early 20th century, founded in 1906. The railroad drew people to the New Mexican city. The boasted a new bank and hotel in 1907. By the close of 1908 the dusty eastern New Mexico town added a bar and a Presbyterian church. The Pink Pony, with cock fights and a snake den, opened to the consternation of Taiban's church-going population. The bar was the lone business survivor into the 1960s. Construction on Taiban's Presbyterian Church drew to a close in late December 1908; services were regularly held in the sanctuary until the 1936. Taiban's population peaked at 400 in 1909. The arid, caprock climate and frequent dust storms gave rise to Taiban's nickname: City of Dust. Sunrise and sunset, approaching storm or clear skies, the mood of the abandoned church evolves as it sits on the eastern New Mexico prairie between heaven and hell.
